Radiation Protection

D.Lgs 101/2020 implements directive 2013/59/Euratom and requires: appointment of Radiation Protection Expert, risk assessment, quality control program, specific staff training, exposed dosimetric surveillance, and maintaining all updated documentation.

Controls must be performed annually for verification of functionality and safety of radiogenic equipment. Additionally, semi-annual controls are required for some specific parameters and extraordinary checks in case of modifications or repairs.

It includes provision of personal dosimeters (worn during work activity), periodic reading (usually monthly), dose registration in the worker's health record, and communication of results to the competent doctor and the Surveillance Service.

Mandatory documentation includes: risk assessment, self-control program, equipment control certificates, staff training register, dosimetric files, Radiation Protection Expert nomination, and periodic verification reports.

Electromedical

They are electrical safety verifications for electromedical equipment according to IEC 62353 standard. They include continuity tests, insulation resistance, leakage currents, and safety device functionality. Mandatory with annual frequency.

All electromedical equipment classified IIa, IIb, III according to MDD directive: dental units, surgical lights, electrosurgical units, patient monitors, ultrasound devices, defibrillators, and any electrical device with direct or indirect patient contact.

Immediately suspend use, report failure to maintenance technician, document the event in maintenance register, and have repair performed by authorized service center. After repair, safety verification is mandatory before reuse.

Regulations

The Radiation Protection Expert is a professional registered in the authorized nominal lists of the Ministry of Health. Duties: risk assessment, technical consultancy, supervision of self-control program, staff training, and interface with health authorities.

Penalties range from warnings and fines up to suspension of activity. In case of serious or repeated violations, criminal penalties may be applied. It is essential to always maintain compliance to avoid legal risks and for patient and operator safety.

New European regulations introduce stricter requirements for justification of radiological practices, dose optimization, mandatory specific training, and more rigorous traceability systems. It is important to stay updated through specialized consultancy.

Training

Mandatory courses: basic radiation protection course for all personnel, advanced course for expert operators, periodic update (minimum every 5 years), specific training for new equipment, and first aid course.

Basic training certificates are valid for 5 years, after which an update course is mandatory. For expert operators, updates are required every 3 years. It is essential to track deadlines to ensure training continuity.

Through training register, certificate preservation, annual training plan, and course participation minutes. Documentation must always be available for inspections and verifications by competent authorities.
